The Collserola Tower is the telecommunications tower built on the Collserola mountain range, on the Vilana hill, for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
It was designed by the English architect Norman Foster with the collaboration of the company Ove Arup & Partners, after their project had won a restricted competition organised by the Barcelona City Council in 1988.
The bold structural conception required a very singular construction, based on building different ceilings above the ground, raising them up through the central cement shaft, which was previously built to its height of more than 70 metres above the ground.
Its 288 metres make it the highest construction in the city. It was put into operation in the spring of 1992.
The Collserola Tower is the telecommunications junction in Catalonia; 100% of television broadcasts and 95% of the radio stations that we hear in Barcelona and its metropolitan area are emitted through the tower. It is also the linking point for the whole Catalan network.
